Six Days Later

At least six days ago, the "pay my dues" function on the APA website went down. It's still down.

This should be no big deal, because I'd venture to guess that even the most out-of-touch philosophers would know enough to see that there's no way that website is secure enough to entrust with personal and credit card information. (If you've already used the function, beware and alert your credit card company.)

In any case, the October JFP is supposed to go online in one week. I have my doubts. Anyone care to venture a guess about the number of TT entry-level jobs in the US that will be advertised? Fewer than 80?

The one who comes closest without going over wins First Prize: a 90-minute guitar lesson with The Edge, and your name will be entered into a contest to select the assassin of Billy Joel.

The one who comes second-closest without going over wins Second Prize: two 90-minute guitar lessons with The Edge (face it: he really needs the lessons).

117. Boldly optimistic? Foolishly naive?

Phylo lists 61 TT jobs at this point. If the over/under is 80, I'll take the over.

58 TT entry levels.

There are more people opting out of the job search due to contraction of phil openings. This raises the question of the usefulness of the APA to people with advanced philosophy degrees not in the academy and not seeking academic jobs. Does it have any purpose?

Curiously, what evidence is there for this claim? I wouldn't be surprised if a few are opting out. But, given the backlog of available PhDs, are so many opting out that it will make a substantive difference in the overall picture?

Can we please just hand over the APA website to the guys who run Phylo?

Here's what's going-on at the Phylo site:

google map, social media, and new features at phylo jobs

Over the next few days, we’ll be updating you on the latest developments to our job advertisement services, including:

1) live Google map of open positions (phylo.info/jobs/map)

2) additional delivery options (RSS, text-only, mobile, Twitter, Facebook)

3) screencasts on using Phylo Jobs services

4) launch of our registered e-newspaper, Job Openings in Philosophy, to aid institutions with federal compliance

5) streamlined Jobs Wiki design for unofficial status updates (which still includes customized RSS feeds) (phylo.info/jobs/wiki)

Seriously, can you imagine the APA doing any of that?

This is smart. This has to be embarrassing for the APA office (though it's not clear they have that capability).

As someone who neither cares for the Edge nor Billy Joel, I'll have to enter a guess: 75.
